Again, this depends on whether you liked the original RTW. If not, then Barbarian Invasion most likely won't convert you. Chances are that Barbarian Invasion would offer more of the same, so don't expect anything earth-shattering to happen here...

That being said, IG could definitely use an expansion. At the very least, some kind of mod that allows you to play as the neutral nations. One of my biggest complaints about IG is that there is too little replay value...only 5 nations from which to choose, and only Austria and Prussia offer decent challenges.

A new map with more provinces would also be a huge plus. Mother Russia deserves more than just five provinces.

i have heard lots of people talking about sea battles on RTW thay will never be as good as on IG just because the only thing that could fit on a ship which will sink an enermys ship is fire arrows and that could take a while or you can borad and take it over.
What im getting at is that sea battles would be boring unlike IG where there is lots of ways to sink or capture a ship.

I don't know if BTW will look better, but with the huge fan base I KNOW I can count on mods and new versions. I still pay IG but there are many draw backs
fighting battles look good but units just fall apart, TOO much melee ect. ect.
IG has great possiblities, but the company missed out on not supporting the modders/ and the players more. I continue to hope the modders save the game and that it will get the attention it deserves.

Barbarian Invasion is just an expansion pack to Rome, and we can gather from previous Total War games that not much will change. Newer map? New units? .. I'd say thats about it.

Oh, and just to clarify, I liked Shogun: Total War the best :).
