This could be due to several causes:

Do you both have the same game version?
Is the game modified or not?
Are you behind a firewall?
Are you on a network?
Isn't your router blocking you from playing online?
Are you actually starting an internet game, rather than LAN?
Is the IP address of the host entered correctly?
Have you tried GameSpy as an alternative?

Hello,
I have exactly the same problem. No multiplayer.
Game: we have the same version, but we're both using the NO-CD patch. Otherwise the game will not start without CD inserted.
Do we have to play BOTH of us with the CDs inserted, rather than with a NOCD patch?
We are on a LAN.

Under MULTIPLAYER:
-LAN does nothing: i create the game, then it enters a menu with the final checkmark not clickable, just the X, and wait forever (and the others in my lan can't see my game I just created.)
-INTERNET does nothing, just like above, but at least I see my intranet IP somewhere in that screen.
Our Windows firewalls have been opened, but not the router: what are the used port I should port-forward?

Where do I have to put the internet (u meant the intranet IP? 192.168.1...) address?
THANKS!!! I cant' wait to play with other humans!!

very important:
I also noticed that executable NO CD patched game file that we're using is ONLY 5,x MB, while the original executable game file was 13,x MB!!!! (but using this one will of course prompt me to insert a CD to play the game)
uhmm....
Do I need NOT to use the nocd patch in order to use multiplayer?
